Bullion Prices Down, Silver and American Gold Eagle Sales Flat

Bullion prices retreated during the mid-week session. Gold prices were off just slightly as gold for June delivery edged down $1.50, or 0.1%, to 1,642.30 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices moved between an intraday low of $1,625 an ounce and a high of $1,647.60 an ounce.

"Gold is not at the forefront of anybody’s trading book at this moment," Reuters quoted George Nickas, a precious metals broker at commodities firm INTL FCStone.

Silver and palladium futures fell the most in precious metals, with respective losses of 1.3% and 1.6%. Platinum matched gold’s decline with a loss of 0.1%. In dollar terms, May silver futures declined 39 cents to $30.36 an ounce, June palladium futures fell $10.70 to $655.10 an ounce, and July platinum futures declined 80.0 cents to $1,547.30 an ounce.

United States Mint Bullion Coin Sales

In related United States Mint news, the first few days of sales are available for the new Proof American Gold Eagle coins. The United States Mint began selling the four different sized 2012-dated coins and the four-coin set last Thursday. As of Monday, sales were just over $8.2 million. That is quite a bit lower than the $27.7 million start for the 2011 Proof American Gold Eagles.
