Bullion Prices Mixed in First Quarter 2013; Gold, Silver Coins Mixed

Bullion prices ended mixed for the week, for March and for the first quarter 2013. During the January through March period, U.S. gold futures ended down 4.8% and silver plummeted 6.3% while platinum gained 2.1% and palladium rallied 9.2%.

In March results, gold gained 1.1% and palladium jumped 4.6% but silver lost 0.4% and platinum declined 0.6%.

Bullion prices for the week, month and quarter were settled Thursday as markets closed until Monday, April 1, in observance of Good Friday.

As for Thursday, gold futures for June delivery shed $11.50, or 0.7%, to settle at $1,595.70 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. That pushed the precious metal into the red for the week — gold fell $10.40, or 0.7%, from last Friday.

In other bullion prices Thursday:

  • May silver futures gave back 28.9 cents, or 1%, to close at $28.32 an ounce,
  • June palladium futures declined a nickel to end at $768.25 and
  • July platinum futures fell $8.90, or 0.6%, to finish at $1,574.60 an ounce

For the week, palladium ended up 0.9% while silver dropped 1.3% and platinum declined 0.5%.

Weekly, March and YTD Sales of United States Mint Bullion Coins

United States Mint bullion sales were stronger overall for the week but mixed for the month with gold coins lower than the previous month and silver coins about the same. In breaking down weekly and March bullion sales stats:

  • American Eagle gold bullion coins reached 16,500 ounces compared to the prior week’s 11,000 ounces. March sales were 62,000 ounces, down from February’s 80,500 ounces.
  • American Eagle silver bullion coins totaled 918,500 versus the previous week’s 726,500. March sales were 3,356,500, which is also down a bit from the prior month’s 3,368,500.
  • American Buffalo gold bullion coins tallied to 1,000 ounces against last week’s amount of 3,500 ounces. March sales were 11,000 ounces compared to February’s 11,500 ounces.
  • Available America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins sold out on March 1 and the 2013-dated coins have yet to be released. Sales on the 1st reached 19,800 coins. That compares to the 14,340 coins sold in February.

In world coins, the Royal Canadian Mint this week began selling its 2013 $20 Silver Wolf Coin at face value. The coin has a legal tender face value of $20 and it is available for $20. Another attractive aspect of the coin is that it contains about one-quarter ounce of 99.99% pure silver.

Bullion Prices in London – Week, March and First Quarter 2013

For the final active day in March, London bullion prices split. In percentages, gold dipped 0.3% but other metals moved up with gains of 1.1% for silver, 1.3% for palladium and 0.1% for platinum. The most recent daily bullion prices and then the weekly percent and net changes for them are shown in the following table.

For London bullion prices in March, gold inched up 0.6% and palladium shot up 3.5% while silver fell 1.1% and platinum dropped 1.4%.

Directions were different for the quarter for gold and platinum. In the first quarter 2013, gold declined 4% and silver fell 4.4% while palladium jumped 10.2% and palladium gained 3.5%.
