Gold Prices and Gold Bullion Coins Up, Silver Coin Sales Flat

by Bullion Prices Staff on March 8, 2012

Gold prices rose for a second day Thursday — as did silver, platinum and palladium, for that matter. On the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, April gold prices added $14.80, or 0.9%, to $1,698.70 an ounce. The metal traded between $1,683.60 an ounce and $1,704.80 an ounce.

Many investors are now looking to Friday’s U.S. jobs data as a directional indicator for how gold will close this week.

"Gold will actually rally on the back of more confidence. The chance of another big shock from Greece is very low and the U.S. is recovering,” said Daniel Smith, an analyst at Standard Chartered, according to Reuters.

As for gains in other precious metals, May silver futures added 24.6 cents, or 0.7%, to $33.83 an ounce, June palladium futures rose $14.10, or 2.1%, to $699.45 an ounce, and April platinum futures advanced $29.40, or 1.8%, to $1,656.70 an ounce.

United States Mint Bullion – Coin Sales

After adding to its numbers for seven straight days, American Silver Eagle bullion coins have been silent for two straight. Gold bullion coins have been hot, however. Sales of the American Gold Buffalo jumped 5,000 to a monthly total of 12,000. Only 7,000 were sold last month. The 1 oz. American Gold Eagle added 1,500 for a March sales total of 16,000. That is 4,000 away from matching last month’s tally.
