Gold Prices Gain, Bullion Coins Again Unchanged

Gold prices rose Thursday for the first time in two sessions. The December futures contract added $39.90, or 2.2%, to $1,857.50 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold prices traded at an intraday low of $1,816.20 an ounce and hit a high of $1,868.70 an ounce.

"Things aren’t looking very positive, and the market continues to remain skittish," Adam Klopfenstein, a senior market strategist at MF Global Holdings Inc. in Chicago, said in a telephone interview, according to Bloomberg. "We need some results to show that jobs will be created."

Silver matched the 2.2% gain in gold prices. December silver futures rose 89.9 cents to $42.53 an ounce.

In PGM futures, December palladium added $12.60, or 1.7%, to $765.30 an ounce and October platinum added $25.80, or 1.4%, to $1,854.50 an ounce.

London Bullion Prices

As compared to New York futures, gains were greater in earlier fixed London bullion prices. PM fixing prices included the following daily changes:

  • Gold prices added $45, or 2.5% at $1,855 an ounce
  • Silver added $1.16, or 2.8%, at $42.14 an ounce
  • Palladium added $15, or 2%, at $762 an ounce
  • Platinum added $26, or 1.4%, at $1,848 an ounce

Sales and News on United States Mint Bullion Coins

Sales increases were again muted Thursday for American bullion coins, according to available United States Mint figures. The Mint has uncharacteristically failed to published gains since Tuesday. Although unusual, it is possible that the Mint has not updated the stats but has indeed sold bullion coins.
