Gold, Silver Prices Fall Slightly; Bullion Coins Unchanged

by Bullion Prices Staff on January 19, 2012

With the exception of palladium, precious metals modestly declined Thursday. February gold prices lost $5.40, or 0.3%, to $1,654.50 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The loss was gold’s first in three sessions. Gold prices traded from a low of $1,649.20 an ounce to a high of $1,670.60 an ounce.

"Gold is pulled upward by the firm equity markets and rising commodity prices," said Daniel Briesemann, an analyst at Commerzbank AG in Frankfurt, according to Bloomberg. "In addition, the SPDR Gold Trust saw its first inflows since the end of November, which might be a signal that physical demand among private investors is picking up again."

In other commodities, March silver futures prices declined 3.4 cents, or 0.1%, to $30.51 an ounce, March palladium futures prices gained $9.90, or 1.5%, to $678.40 an ounce and April platinum futures prices fell $7.30, or 0.5%, to $1,518.
